The Foundation was established on September 1, 1991, as the Ruth and Frank Stanton Fund by Stanton and his wife Ruth before her death in 1992. After his wife's death, Frank Stanton continued his philanthropic work, until his own death in 2006. By 2009, the name had changed to the "Stanton Foundation".
